Despite careful due diligence on what to expect, she still encountered
surprises, from a run-in with religious police for a head scarf violation
to unexpected requests to teach macroeconomics and create a crash
course in world geography. Overall, Bocskor says, " The personal and professional
benefits were wonderful. " She returned to the United States in
2012, and soon landed a position that she held for 10 years teaching a
multinational enterprises course at American University.
Lawyers with similar teaching aspirations can explore opportunities
through universities in the United States and overseas. For example, the
University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law offers an undergraduate
law program in Cambodia, China, and Vietnam taught by U.S.trained
lawyers.
Andrew Shepherd, University of Arizona deputy director of global faculty,
says the school periodically hires for two-to-three-year roles abroad.
The English-language curriculum, prepared by the university, includes
U.S. law school courses and international business topics.
IS WORKING ABROAD RIGHT FOR YOU?
Attorneys who have lived and worked abroad highlight a range of qualities
that helped them thrive in overseas roles, including mental and
emotional intelligence, curiosity, flexibility, love of learning, and respect
for differences in cultural and legal value systems.
Many also say it's important to have good self-awareness and an ability to
build and foster interpersonal connections. All advise observing, listening,
and asking questions before offering advice or recommendations.
An assignment abroad can seem like a leap into the unknown. Even
careful preparation can't identify all risks or eliminate obstacles that inevitably
arise. So perhaps those seeking and embarking on overseas work
would benefit from another quality that has worked well for Reed:
gumption. If you think you have it, it may be your cue to seize an opportunity
of a lifetime.
