Now, with more time on his hands, he says he hopes to join his wife on
some trips and to " get through that giant stack of books I haven't gotten
to. " Other goals are to indulge in his passion for the opera and to cull his
huge collection of books and materials about the Holocaust, hopefully
by interesting a university or archive in acquiring them.
But, most of all, he says, " I want to continue speaking out about the cruelties
that Putin is foisting on Ukraine. " In fact, in early March he was in
Ukraine to moderate a panel discussion at a conference hosted by the
Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office. He also visited Bucha, where he
met with about a dozen survivors of the 2022 massacre there. " That was
both very sad and deeply unsettling. I am still haunted by that meeting, "
he says.
Rosenbaum acknowledges there has long been a debate in some circles
as to the fairness of prosecuting old Nazi war criminals who claimed they
were just camp guards following orders. He has little patience with that
argument. To the extent a concentration camp guard held a gun to prevent
prisoners from escaping, Rosenbaum says that person facilitated their
murder and bears the guilt of that crime.
As for the impact of his nearly 40 years of so-called Nazi hunting: " I have
long had this fantasy, " Rosenbaum muses, " [that] somewhere in the world
there will be someone who has to decide whether to obey a criminal order,
and he will recall the image of a white-haired man hauled into court.
Perhaps he will say to himself, 'If I do this thing, I will have to look over my
shoulder for the rest of my life.' "
