THE PRO BONO EFFECT
cluding helpful resources and training to ensure
you can represent clients with confidence
and a mentor who will help you along the way, "
he says.
Adrian Gottshall, director of pro bono representation
and training for the Pro Bono Center, lauded
Barringer for stepping outside of his comfort
zone to learn a new substantive area of law.
" That courage will have a lifelong impact on his
pro bono client, " Gottshall says, adding that
Barringer stands as an example of how attorneys,
regardless of their expertise, can use their
core skills to achieve positive outcomes for the
District's underserved. " Volunteers do not need
prior litigation experience to accept a full representation
pro bono case. Our team provides
the training and mentoring needed for successful
representation. "
Gottshall says there is a profound need for legal
help among under-resourced individuals in
the District, and often solo attorneys, retired
lawyers, and other volunteers play a crucial role
in filling these gaps in representation.
" Over the last year, there has been an increase
in volunteer applications from individual attorneys
who are not affiliated with big law firms, "
she says. " These dedicated volunteers have
achieved excellent case outcomes. I encourage
individual attorneys to contact us to explore
the case type that matches their interests. "
The transformative effect on people's lives is
what continues to motivate Barringer's pro
bono service. " The clients have been very
pleased with the outcomes, and I know that
the impact on their lives is substantial, " he says.
" I encourage others to do this. I know that
sometimes it feels like you can't make a difference,
but through working with the Advocacy
& Justice Clinic, you can. "
While the cases can be challenging, they are
also stimulating, Barringer says, and they fit his
desire to have a positive impact as nicely as a
pair of comfortable pants.
" I still want to give back. I've been very excited
to have the opportunity to help clients in the
District with some challenges that they had,
and, with any luck and fingers crossed, I'll never
retire, " he says. " Working with the Advocacy &
Justice Clinic has been a great way to learn and
continue to develop skills I can use to help other
people. Hopefully I can keep using these
skills for a long time. "
