grams have always
been nonrestrictive.
" We're trying to build
the next generation
of leaders of the profession
that are diverse,
but we want to
make sure that all of
that experience, training,
and opportunity
is open to anybody
in any firm anytime,
anywhere we provide
it, " Grey says.
" We are not sitting
back, keeping our
fingers crossed, and
hoping for the best, "
Grey adds. " We are
running to the fire and saying, here's what we do; here's how we do it.
Let's get on with the show. "
There are multiple alternative ways for firms to seek diverse talent, says
Esther H. Lim, partner and chief diversity and inclusion officer at the intellectual
property firm Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner,
LLP in Washington, D.C.
" We've rolled out a program - Finnegan IP University - to address the
need to build a pipeline earlier than law schools by going to colleges
and universities, " Lim says. " We are reaching out to STEM majors in undergraduate
and graduate institutions nationwide and exposing them to
the possibility of career options in intellectual property. "
The firm has also tapped into a pipeline of law students " who thirst for
more information and are eager to pursue IP, " Lim says.
Zakiyyah T. Salim-Williams, partner and chief diversity officer at Gibson,
Dunn & Crutcher LLP, says the firm's diversity goals remain the same following
Blum's lawsuits. " Our goal is always how we [can] ensure that we
have a workforce that really reflects the society that we live in and the
cities in which we operate, " Salim-Williams says. " We feel like we have a
really strong diversity program that really focuses on recruiting, advancing,
and promoting diverse talents. "
" I don't think we've changed anything. What we haven't done, more than
anything, is retrench any of our commitment, " she says.
