REMEMBERING TRAILBLAZER
JUDGE RICARDO URBINA
Judge Ricardo Manuel Urbina, who blazed paths in the legal
community as the first Latino judge on D.C. Superior Court
as well as on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia,
passed away in June at age 78 of Parkinson's disease. He
is remembered for his commitment to civil liberties, keen
sense of fairness, and mentorship of new attorneys.

TWO NEW JUDGES JOIN
D.C. SUPERIOR COURT
On June 21 D.C. Superior Court added two more
judges to its roster, welcoming Tanya Monique
Jones Bosier and Judith Pipe as its newest associate
judges.
Judge Jones Bosier was first appointed to Superior
Court as magistrate judge in 2017 and presided
in its Civil, Domestic Violence, and Probate
Divisions and in Family Court. Judge Pipe was
appointed magistrate judge in 2020, serving in
Superior Court's Domestic Violence and Criminal
Divisions, where she presided over criminal and
civil matters. Both judges were sworn in by Chief
Judge Anita Josey-Herring.

WASHINGTON LAWYER WINS
SECOND DATELINE AWARD
Washington Lawyer continues to be recognized
for journalism excellence, winning a Dateline
Award from the Washington, D.C., chapter of
the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJDC)
during its annual awards dinner on June 11.
SPJDC picked Peter Meyers's " Take a Chance?
Releasing D.C. Prisoners Under the Second Look
Amendment Act " (July/August 2023 issue) as best
in commentary and criticism among newsletter
and trade publications. Jeremy Conrad's feature
article " Unwanted: Haitian Migration & Echoes
of Exclusion " (March/April 2023 issue) was a finalist
in the features category.
