In her May article "Difficult Clients: What to Do
and When to Let Go," Tracy Schorn poses the
question, "What motivates someone to litigate,
even to the point of self-destruction?" I find that
the legal profession crosses over into a lot of
other disciplines from time to time, and
psychology falls into this category. As lawyers,
we're required to be good listeners and to
gather information that will help us best serve
our clients. Sometimes that requires reading
between the lines when a client is reluctant
to discuss sensitive information, comforting
clients, and, yes, dealing with some that may be
difficult. I know these lessons aren't necessarily
taught in the average law school class, but they
are put to good use almost daily in our practice.

KEEP ME CURRENT
I have been following the recent changes to
Washington Lawyer and I think there are a lot
of improved areas. One of my favorite sections
to read, both in the old magazine and the
revised version, is the department on books.
With a heavy caseload, I don't always get a
chance to read for pleasure or to see what other
lawyers have published - and I know that
many of us are prolific as writers - but this
monthly snapshot of things to read and watch
included in the "Worth Reading" and "Media
Bytes" sections keeps me current. Thanks for
the continued good work.
