My firm focuses almost exclusively on international dispute resolution. This
includes international arbitration, litigation, and debt recovery. We're small, but
we've been very successful by just having this niche. We have a big advantage
over larger firms that aren't quite so focused because we know the issues better
than just about anybody else. I have two brilliant associates who work their
hearts out for me. Almost all our clients are foreign clients.
International dispute resolution requires a knowledge of not just foreign and
domestic laws, but also foreign cultures. It's that mixture of law and culture that
makes this such a unique area of practice. Our practice allows us to travel the
world and see things that you wouldn't see if you were in a regular domestic
practice. Learning about the world is part of the job.
If you want to practice in this area, you must be creative and optimistic. No
client is going to pay you just to point out the problems you face. You need to
be able to see solutions. You need to be persistent. You can't just do an hour of
research and say, "This is impossible!" You need to be able to make it possible,
to think up strategies that nobody has ever thought of before.
