Washington Lawyer - September/October 2020 - 9

Potomac Law has never
been burdened by aspects
of the Big Law model that
have destroyed some
traditional firms in the past
decade: expensive brick-andmortar space, the traditional
partner-apprentice dynamic,
and bloated staff.
The firm's attorneys write about developments
in the law and issues of concern to prospective
clients, give talks and presentations at con-
ferences, and issue client bulletins, all the while
making sure prospective clients understand
that they'll get experienced legal service at
a fraction of the cost of Big Law. It is essentially
a network-building marketing effort that brings
in new business.
"We started out representing a lot of small
private companies; as we have grown, we now
serve a mix of public and private companies,"
Lieber says. "We count nine Fortune 100 firms
as clients now," adds Laro.
Will Potomac continue to grow? "We don't
want to grow too quickly," says Laro. "We
don't set arbitrary goals for headcount or geographic location. We have built the firm around
excellent lawyers as we meet them. We tend to
be highly selective, and our firm has largely
grown by word of mouth. Many of our lawyers
were introduced to us by other Potomac
lawyers or even clients."
"Our culture is important, and we want to make
sure that a lawyer considering us will be a good
professional and cultural fit, so our recruiting
process is thoughtful and can take some time,"
says Lieber.
In the next issue, learn how Potomac Law
builds firm culture and what its lawyers have
to say about it.
