You get a little nauseous right before a hearing. Many of you
are new attorneys who are in a transition period, so that
excitement manifests itself as worry that you are going to
make the most egregious mistakes known to humankind, such that it
simply is not possible to ever effectively practice law. Eventually that
feeling evolves and you realize that although you still get butterflies, you
get them because you love what you do and want to give your best
every single time.
You are
valued.
Remote
proceedings require
more multitasking
than in-person proceedings.
You have
to be alert for confusion
and anxiety
- your own and
that of the other
participants.
Remote proceedings
are still official
proceedings, but
there is no security screening, no bench, no flags, no pomp and circumstance.
That means that throughout the pandemic, you have had to
work even harder to protect your clients' rights and to meet their
expectations.
Your clients missed you. They thanked you for allowing them to be heard
under such difficult conditions.
Because life has been so different for the past three years, you may start
to feel anxiety creep in when you think about what the future may hold.
So, remember this: You chose the legal profession because you are dedicated
to your work. Be the authority that you are, participate in proceedings
with confidence, and remember: You made it through a global
pandemic. You've got this!
