A CALL FOR
MENTORS
In her role as recruiter,
Gottshall is always
looking for mentors -
attorneys with three or
more years of experience
in the areas of housing,
Social Security, consumer,
and family law to train
and support pro bono
volunteers. " They should genuinely enjoy mentoring so when they get
that call, they're excited, eager, and patient with the volunteer, " she says.
Mentoring doesn't have to monopolize an attorney's life, assures
Gottshall, who herself mentors pro bono volunteers. " Outside of
regular job duties, mentoring is an opportunity to use my skills and
my ex per ience to help another lawyer help a member of our community, "
she says. " I didn't find it a heavy lift. It was a good time investment
for me. "
Attorneys can give as much time as they have, whether it's once a month
or once a year. Davis-Ricci mentors several months of the year and says
it's worth the time and effort for attorneys to pull together and help as
many people as possible.
" We have such a wealth of information and expertise. All of us are
working full-time, and there is never a shortage of work. We're not competing
for clients. If we can enlist private practice, law firms, and in-house
counsel and mobilize these attorneys to help our community, we're
going to be able to reach so many that we don't have the bandwidth to
help alone, " Davis-Ricci says.
