Pro Bono Mentoring Effect
M
HIGH-IMPACT HELP FOR CLIENTS
By Stacy Julien
att Chung just may have found his pro bono
niche. After the successful outcome of his
first pro bono bankruptcy case, the patent
attorney at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton
LLP is eager to do more to help those saddled by
crushing debt they have no ability to pay.
" When the opportunity came to volunteer with the [D.C. Bar Pro Bono
Center's] Bankruptcy Clinic, I jumped at it, " says Chung, who earned his
JD from New York Law School in 2012. " I wasn't familiar with the law
itself, but I thought that maybe through this, I may be able to one day
also help the community with student loan relief. I think this is where
I can make an impact. "
Mission-focused, teachable, and compassionate lawyers like Chung are
exactly the kind of volunteers the Pro Bono Center is looking for. They
invest their time giving free legal assistance to those who can least afford
counsel, often accepting pro bono cases outside their area of expertise.
Working alongside
these volunteers are
attorney mentors who
help them navigate
the unfamiliar terrain
of an area of law different
than their
actual practice.
When it all comes
together and works,
it's a win-win-win for
everyone - the
mentor, the mentee,
and the client.
" Our pro bono volunteers
won't know at
times how to move
forward with a case,
even if they read
the law, " says Adrian
Gottshall, who comanages

Natalie Walker
Webster & Fredrickson, PLLC
and staffs the Landlord Tenant Resource Center at D.C. Superior Court.
" Our mentors can give volunteers what they can't read in a book.
Ultimately, we want them to feel supported so that they have a good
pro bono experience and come back. "
The need for volunteer attorneys is greater than ever before, exacerbated
by a pandemic that isn't letting up. Loss of wages and benefits and the
threat of eviction have put many residents in the vulnerable position of
needing legal help they can't afford.
But it hasn't been easy to recruit lawyers lately, with COVID-19 restrictions
curbing normal networking opportunities and attorneys pausing to
take care of their families at home. In its call for volunteers, the Pro Bono
Center's message is clear: you won't go it alone. Behind every volunteer
is a mentor, a team of Pro Bono Center staff members, and a wealth of
trainings and resources to prepare attorneys to take on a pro bono
matter.

TEACHING MORE THAN THE LAW
When Chung took on the case of a single mom filing for bankruptcy to
protect her family from eviction, his mentor, Natalie Walker, was right
there with him. The case proved more complex than it seemed at the
