political advocacy.

counsel for the accused in criminal cases.
The demand will only grow in the days to come. "There's going to be
a tremendous need, and it's not a need that can be filled by the legal
services community alone," Drane says. "[We're] going to need the partnership of pro bono attorneys and other members of the community,
both in supporting organizations and in doing pro bono work."
"We need a civil Gideon to ease the overburdened courts, to provide representation to those in need, and to address the problems that impact
an ever-growing portion of the population. My hope is that this crisis
helps people understand why representation in civil court is important
to a fair and just society," says Washington.
Chinh Q. Le, legal director of the Legal Aid Society, says that the pressure
placed on legal services providers during the pandemic has helped organizations come to new realizations regarding how injustice is perpetuated within the status quo. "The processes we set up now may allow for
fairer access long after we have emerged from the COVID crisis," he says.
As the justice system continues to undergo change, the monumental
challenges also continue to create opportunities for improving our legal
processes and the delivery of legal services. Legal services providers
have strengthened their ability to serve the District's most vulnerable by
banding together for a common cause, and the community can come
out of this crisis better and stronger for it.
Gwen McDowell Washington, manager and legal aid attorney for the
Tenant Advocacy and Support Practice at Legal Counsel for the Elderly
and a key player in creating LTLAN, is among those who see the possibility to reimagine the public's perspective on civil justice. She reflects
