LSC'S SANDMAN SPEAKS
ON STATE OF CIVIL LEGAL AID
On August 9 Legal Services Corporation President
James Sandman gave a rousing speech about
the need for increased access to justice during the
American Bar Association's Annual Meeting in
San Francisco. "[Legal aid] gives people faith that
our nation's solemn pledge of 'justice for all' is alive

REMEMBERING JUDGE JAMES ROBERTSON
The D.C. Bar is mourning the loss of Judge James
Robertson, who served on the U.S. District Court for
the District of Columbia for 15 years and was president of the Bar from 1991 to 1992. During his tenure
as president, Robertson advocated for increased
diversity in the legal profession, challenging law
firms to provide more opportunities for minority
attorneys. Judge Robertson passed away on
September 7 at age 81.

WASHINGTON LAWYER WINS
NABE LUMINARY AWARD
Washington Lawyer, the D.C. Bar's flagship magazine,
has won a 2019 Luminary Award from the National
Association of Bar Executives' Communications
Section for excellence in regular publications. The
award was presented on September 27 at the NABE
Communication Section's annual workshop in
Cleveland, Ohio. Previously published as District
Lawyer, the Bar's magazine first went to print in 1976.
It rebranded as Washington Lawyer in 1986, delivering
timely articles and substantive legal content to
the Bar's membership while closely following the
transformation of the legal profession.
