law firm, then with a business consulting firm until he retired at age 73.

it's great. But if it's broken, it's great," he says.

'RUNNING KEEPS ME GOING'

"Running keeps me going," Englert continues. "The best thing about
running is that it gave my wife and me an excuse to travel all over the
country for various meets." When not competing, Englert runs at least
two miles two or three times a week on a treadmill at his retirement
community in Lake Ridge, Virginia.

The only time one might hear a hint of bragging in Englert's voice is
when he talks about running. Englert started running - in his basement
- in 1982 when he was 60 after reading Dr. Kenneth Cooper's book
Aerobics. "When I first started, I couldn't even run a quarter of a mile," he
recalls. "But I kept at it."
That same year he competed in a 400-meter and 800-meter race and
won a silver and gold medal, respectively. That sparked Englert's passion
for competitive running.
On June 11, 2019, Englert set another world record for men in the 95-to-99
age group: completing a 5,000-meter race in just 42 minutes at the USA
Track and Field (USATF) Masters Outdoor Championships in Ames, Iowa.
Last year, he earned the USATF world record in the 800-meter race,
clocking in at just under six minutes.
In 2014 Englert and his team of fellow nonagenarian runners set world
records in the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 relays. In an interview with the
New York Times, Englert vowed to continue training and competing.
"People make themselves old," Englert said. "First they say, I'm too old to
do this and too old to do that, and suddenly they look in the mirror and
they are old." Englert thinks he has set at least 10 world records over the
course of his running career so far. "I say 'I think' because [world records]

Englert Jr. says his dad may be a man of few words, but to him he is a
living hero. "My father is more of someone who sets an example than
someone who talks a lot," the younger Englert says. "He showed me
how to work hard and be very efficient. He also showed me the value
of family obligations.
"To me, he's a hero. He lives in a retirement community, but he stays very
active, not only through running but also through various other activities
such as playing bridge or talking about public affairs. He keeps moving
literally and figuratively."
