LEGAL APPS
BUILT FOR YOU
Many legal web and mobile apps are popping
up, but are they really useful to you? Former
civil litigator and legal tech expert Nicole
Bradick argues that some legal apps could
actually hinder your efforts because of shoddy
designs with counterintuitive functionality.
That's why in January 2018 she launched Theory
and Principle, a software development firm that
creates legal apps exclusively. The Portland,
Maine-based company engages its clients in
rigorous research to pinpoint their technological goals before designing apps with simple
interfaces that forge better usability. Then it
puts the product through exhaustive user
testing to ensure that clients get the most
effective legal app. Theory and Principle can
also work with other legal tech companies to
upgrade existing legal apps.

What's more annoying than routinely changing
passwords? Remembering all of those passwords. Sure, there are plenty of passwordmanagement tools out there with varying
degrees of security and usability, but lawyers
need the ones with Fort Knox-like security.
Consider Dashlane's newly upgraded passwordmanagement app. For $4 a month, it can save
and generate numerous (and stronger) passwords across multiple platforms. Then under
one master password, Dashlane allows you to
log onto password-required websites automatically. Dashlane's newer features, however,
are the bigger selling points. The built-in VPN
(virtual private network) provides more protection when using public Wi-Fi systems because
it encrypts your internet activity and conceals
your location - perfect for lawyers when
needing to share sensitive information on the
fly. Another hot new feature is the Identity
Dashboard that keeps track of your online
health, even indicating when and where your
passwords and pertinent information may have
been compromised.

TWO PODCASTS
TO KEEP YOU
ON TRACK
Legal technology evolves at such blinding speed
that it's difficult to keep track. To stay in the know,
tune in monthly to Monica Bay and Bob Ambrogi's
Law Technology Now podcast as they discuss the
latest trends in technology and their impact on
the legal field. The journalist-and-lawyer duo
brings more than 30 years of combined experience covering legal technology. On Law
Technology Now, they talk with various legal tech
players to explore topics such as artificial intelligence, legal analytics, cloud technology, and
how technology promotes greater access to
justice and affordable legal services. Listen to the
podcast on Legal Talk Network's website or
download from Apple iTunes or Google Play.

Thomson Reuters Westlaw Edge launched a new
podcast, Insights From the Edge, in July 2018. This
podcast also discusses the latest trends in legal
technology, particularly artificial intelligence and
litigation analytics. Each episode features a
Westlaw Edge Insight attorney and special guests.

STOP RECREATING
THE WHEEL
Have you ever devoted a lot resources to creating
a legal app only to find out later that several other
similar ones already existed? Before recreating that
unnecessary and, more importantly, costly wheel,
browse the Justice Tech Catalog, which relaunched
in late August. A repository of technology projects
and criminal justice data, the Justice Tech Catalog
contains 133 projects that include a harm assessment
risk tool that predicts likelihood of recidivism, crowdfunding platforms for legal actions, and hate crime
apps. "This isn't just a list of projects, but a place to
find source code and open data portals - where
applicable - for projects already underway," Justice
Tech Catalog founder Jason Tashea explained in the
ABA Journal. "Compiling this resource, I hope, will
jump-start more experimentation and entrepreneurship in the criminal justice system."
