NEW YORK

PORTLAND

SINGAPORE

New York has become a safer city. Over the past
two decades, city officials have worked hard to
address an epidemic of violent crime. Now, New
York officials use a data-driven approach to reduce
crime and incorporate predictive modeling as a
key concept in both law enforcement and fire
department activities.

While many cities are bicycle friendly, Portland
uses technology to keep cyclists safer. Portland's
$1 million Traffic Sensor Safety Project provides
funding for 200 streetlight sensors to better track
cyclists and to receive more comprehensive data
on traffic patterns.

Singapore has very limited land resources, and
12 percent is set aside for roads and transport
infrastructure. With more than one million
vehicles on the road, Singapore has implemented a policy curtailing car ownership, thus
making it friendlier for pedestrians.

SEOUL

VIENNA

Seoul holds its elderly citizens in high regard.
The city uses a range of technologies such as
digital services platforms and remote monitoring
devices to provide health care services for the
elderly. These strategies ensure that the overall
health care system is not overburdened.

Vienna has lofty yet attainable goals when it
comes to energy, and it's turning to its citizens
for help. Through its Citizen Solar Power Plant
Project, Vienna plans to obtain 50 percent of its
energy from renewable resources by 2030. To
achieve this, Vienna has partnered with a local
energy provider to develop a crowd-funding
model, whereby citizens can buy half or whole
panels and receive a guaranteed return of 3.1
percent annually.

ENERGY
When it comes to energy innovation, Nice has
become a major player. The city is home to two
major energy efforts: It boasts the Nice Grid, the
first French smart solar district project. It also
touts its Interflex Project, which allows the city
to test different innovative solutions to reduce
energy consumption, improve the production
and distribution of electricity, and test new
methods of energy storage.
