SECURITY Preparing for the Inevitable By William Roberts A byproduct of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 election was the revelation that the tactics of state-sponsored hackers are the same as those of any other determined cybercriminal. Russia's military intelligence agency used spear phishing, spoofing, fake personas, malware, and cryptocurrency to gain unauthorized access to the computers and networks of individuals and organizations involved in the Clinton campaign. The hacks enabled Russians to steal and release documents for the alleged purpose of interfering in the U.S. election.
