BAR LEADERS GIVE BACK
AT LEGAL BRIEF CLINIC

Members of the D.C. Bar Board of Governors and the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center
Pro Bono Committee were among attorney volunteers who came out for the
Pro Bono Center's March 9 Advice & Referral Clinic, which served 149 lowincome D.C. residents. The monthly clinic, which provides pro se individuals
with general information, advice, and brief services, operates at two Bread for
the City locations in Shaw and Anacostia.

On March 11 the Washington Council of Lawyers hosted a dinner and discussion with D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen (center), focusing on ways that
local lawyers can advocate at the Council on access to justice issues. Allen
shared information about his work on the D.C. Council, particularly on the
Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety.

WCL HOSTS PRO BONO EVENT
FOR IN-HOUSE COUNSEL

On March 14 in-house counsel from around the Washington, D.C., area came
together for the Washington Council of Lawyers' In-House Pro Bono Breakfast
and Fair. Cosponsored by the Association of Corporate Counsel - National
Capital Region and the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, the event featured a panel
discussion on opportunities for in-house counsel to provide pro bono legal
services and solutions to common challenges.

OF MENTORS IN THE LAW

On February 21 D.C. Bar President Esther H. Lim (center) gathered with visiting
members of the Bar's Law Student Community after she spoke with them about
the importance of having mentors throughout their journeys in the legal field.

TRAINED & READY TO LEAD

D.C. Bar President-Elect Susan M. Hoffman and D.C. Bar CEO Robert Spagnoletti
addressed attendees during a workshop at the American Bar Association's Bar
Leadership Institute (BLI) in Chicago in March. The BLI is held annually for CEOs
and new bar presidents, preparing leaders of national, state, local, and specialfocus bars across the country to become stewards of their organizations.

GWU HOSTS RALPH NADER
IN CORPORATE CRIME PANEL

On March 18 the George Washington University Law School's American
Constitution Society hosted a panel discussion with consumer advocate,
lawyer, and author Ralph Nader (right). The conversation, moderated by
Associate Dean Alan B. Morrison, focused on the corporate crime wave,
corporate law firms, and the great taboos.

A CONVERSATION
ON RACE & POLITICS

On March 6 the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) David A. Clarke
School of Law presented the program "Controversy in the Commonwealth:
A Conversation With Professor Michael Fauntroy on Racist Images and Politics."
The interview was hosted by UDC Law Acting Dean John C. Brittain (right) and
also featured former D.C. Mayor Sharon Pratt. Fauntroy (left) is an associate professor of political science and acting director of the Ronald Walters Leadership
and Public Policy Center at Howard University. The conversation tackled the
issues of racial bias and racist images encountered in Virginia state leadership
and academic institutions nationwide.
