My intuition and my experience
persuade me that having women on
the bench, and in other positions of
prominence, is extremely important.
The self-perception of women is informed
by such examples, and by the
belief of women that they, too, can
achieve professional success at the
highest levels.
JUSTICE SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR
The Majesty of the Law, 2003
hen I was 11 years old, I photocopied
the July 20, 1981, cover of
Time magazine and turned it into
my personal coloring book. On the
cover was Sandra Day O'Connor
with the headline " Justice - At
Last. " It was a title that meant so
many things to so many people. To me, it meant
that she had beaten me to it, but as I grew up,
I came to understand that I, too, could be a
judge because she had forged a path for me
and countless others.
Justice Sandra Day O'Connor pictured in front of the U.S. Supreme
Court building after being sworn in on September 25, 1981, making
history as the first woman justice of the Court. Justice O'Connor passed
away on December 1, 2023.
