ZINGER continued from page 39
formally adopted, he says that it has helped
facilitate a discussion in the industry that
crosses corporate and national borders to
propel positive change. " Part of what I wanted
to create with this is a collective sense of who
we are, a collective sense of action. "
Zinger says the General Counsel Oath is not
intended to be a passive, one-time act. He's
hoping for a sustained commitment by oathtakers. " How do I see that happening? It
depends what the GCs do with it personally, "
says Zinger. " You need to first make a conscious
decision to commit to the oath, and then ask
yourself how you activate the values within the
oath. Some might do it in a personal or private
way, others might share it with their teams, and
some will take it to the next level and use the
ideas to change their organization, using the
oath as a blueprint for bigger impact and

bigger change ... a snowball effect of
positivity. "
Initially, Zinger's motivation was to encourage
others to understand how their positions of
authority can effect change. Beyond that, he's
curious to see what happens from there. " There
isn't an angle beyond creating a positive
momentum, " Zinger says.
Following the oath's section on personal
behavior means attorneys would be kind,
open-minded, humble, caring, and supportive.
They would nurture their diverse teams,
looking for opportunities to aid in their
advancement, and they would treat external
parties, even adversaries, with civility and professional courtesy. Zinger says he knows that
these positive values can be captured without
the conflict and drama typically associated
with the legal practice.

" There's a fallacy. People think if your lawyer
isn't demanding or unreasonable, he or she
isn't a good lawyer, which is just ridiculous, "
Zinger says. " If you can be the kind of lawyer
who can get things done without hostility and
without aggression, you can create better
outcomes and become a role model for your
team and the rest of the organization. "
