BAR TAKES PART IN NEW
MENTAL HEALTH SURVEY
The D.C. Bar is participating in a pivotal
research project that seeks to provide deeper
insight into mental health struggles in the
legal profession, including risk factors, triggers,
and suggestions to improve lawyer well-being.
The survey will build upon the findings of the
landmark 2016 American Bar Association/
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation study that
revealed alarming levels of problem drinking
and mental health disorders among U.S.
attorneys. The survey will be distributed to
a random sample of 40,000 Bar members in
the spring.

GET TO KNOW JUDGE DEAHL
Joshua Deahl, the newest D.C. Court of
Appeals judge, formerly served as an attorney
in the appellate division of the Public Defender
Service (PDS) for the District of Columbia. Prior
to his work at PDS, Deahl was counsel in the
appellate litigation and Supreme Court
practice at the Washington, D.C., office of
O'Melveny & Myers LLP, where he represented
some of America's largest companies.

The National Conference of Bar Presidents
(NCBP) has selected D.C. Bar President Susan
M. Hoffman's January/February 2020 column
in Washington Lawyer as the winner of its first
Presidents Pages Award for its compelling
content. Hoffman was recognized at the 2020
NCBP Midyear Meeting on February 14 in
Austin, Texas.
Two former Bar presidents were also recognized in Austin. WilmerHale LLP partner Jamie
S. Gorelick received the Outstanding Service
Award from the Fellows of the American Bar
Foundation for her strong commitment to the
highest principles and traditions of the legal
profession and to service to the public. Arnold
& Porter LLP senior counsel Robert N. Weiner
was honored with the Father Robert F. Drinan
Award for Distinguished Service by the
American Bar Association Section of Civil
Rights and Social Justice.
