WOMEN OF IMPACT
LEGAL LEADERS TO WATCH
T
his year we celebrate the centennial of the ratification of
the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote,
a pivotal moment in this country's history. It is also worth
noting that 100 years ago women were finally granted
admission to the bar in all states, the culmination of
a hard-fought battle by many to gain entry into a
profession that largely viewed women as unsuited to
the practice of law on account of their gender.
In 1873 U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph P. Bradley famously opined
in Bradwell v. The State that the "natural and proper timidity and
delicacy which belongs to the female sex evidently unfits it for many
of the occupations of civil life." Nineteen years later, Myra Bradwell, the
plaintiff in that case, became the first woman admitted to practice
before the U.S. Supreme Court, proving that women's so-called
preordained destinies are not limited to the home.
Today women make up 36 percent of the legal profession. They are in
courtrooms and corporate boardrooms, in law firms and government,
and everywhere in between. They are blazing trails and shattering
barriers. Many are serving in leadership positions and moving the
needle on diversity and gender equity in the spaces they occupy.
In this issue we celebrate seven women D.C. Bar members whose
remarkable careers, achievements, and passion for the law are inspiring
others and helping to advance the role of women in the law.
