BAR CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS

The D.C. Bar held its annual holiday celebration on December 20. The luncheon
included giveaways and fun photo ops. D.C. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Anna
Blackburne-Rigsby, D.C. Bar Immediate Past President Patrick McGlone, and D.C.
Bar CLE Program Director Dennis Cuevas took part in the festivities. Maurice
Morrow of Facilities, who played Santa Claus at the party, is pictured with IT
Department staff members Constantine Kolouas, Javier Mascorro, Chelsea
Scarborough, and Lee Scott. The Bar's Member Services team (Sabrina Fletcher,
H. Diedrich Holljes, Natasha Ghent-Rodriguez, Nicole Fisher, and Chauntese
Gary) displayed their holiday spirit.

AAJLJ HOLDS PURSUIT
OF JUSTICE AWARDS

The American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists hosted its 2018 Pursuit
of Justice Awards on December 10, with Sen. Joe Lieberman appearing as
a guest presenter. Award recipients included distinguished legal figures Robert
Abrams, the former attorney general of New York and partner at Stroock
& Stroock & Lavan LLP, and Gabriel Groisman, mayor of Bal Harbour, Florida,
and founding partner at Groisman Law PLLC.

Spagnoletti said, "She fought for the underdog when it wasn't always popular
or convenient ... She truly is one of the legends of the law and her presence in
the legal community will be sorely missed."

WCL EXPLORES PRO BONO
WORK IN IMPACT LITIGATION

The Washington Council of Lawyers hosted Best Practices in Pro Bono: Impact
Litigation on January 9 at Fried Frank LLP. Panelists (from left to right) Paul Lee,
pro bono counsel at Steptoe & Johnson LLP; Chinh Le, legal director at the
Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia; Ted Howard, pro bono partner at
Wiley Rein LLP; and Adina Appelbaum, program director at the CAIR Coalition's
Immigration Impact Lab, explored the challenges and opportunities surrounding pro bono work in class action and impact litigation cases.

STARTING THE NEW YEAR RIGHT

Yoga NoMa instructor Alisha Lineswala (in pink) led a yoga class for attorneys
who came out for the Washington Council of Lawyers' Yoga for Lawyers event
on January 10. The class was held at the Legal Aid Society of the District of
Columbia.

REMEMBERING JUDGE WALD

Judge Patricia Wald, the first woman to serve as chief judge of the United States
Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, passed away on January 12
at age 90. After graduating from Yale Law School in a class of 11 women, Judge
Wald made her mark in the District, primarily in public interest law, before
President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the bench. D.C. Bar CEO Bob
