long-delayed release. Kevin's story was a poignant testament to the importance
of post-disposition representation of youth.
"The lawyer can be the firm, absolute committed voice of the child to make
sure that their point of view is heard among people who are making important
decisions in their lives. And [the lawyer can] hold everybody to account for what
was said later, because many things will be promised to the child at meetings,
but many of these promises aren't carried through," said Nancy Glass, Juvenile
Services Program manager for the Public Defender Service for the District of
Columbia.
Other featured guests at the conference included D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and
Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights President and CEO Vanita Gupta.
In her keynote speech, Gupta highlighted the issues of trauma and injustice for
marginalized communities and children due to poverty, policing, and more.
Gupta also emphasized that attorneys need to step up to ensure justice for all.
"I believe that when we show up for justice, we get to write the story, and we
drive the change, and we move just a little bit closer toward that enduring
promise of a just and fair America," she said. "I don't think that this is the time
for any of us, no matter where we sit, to sit on the sidelines. This work has never
been easy, but our democracy does not protect itself."
