Another challenge will be finding the time to advance my initiatives while
tending to the "business" of the Bar, including the many meetings and events
that are part of the day-to-day operations.
The challenge facing all unified or integrated bar associations across the
country is a potential First Amendment challenge to mandatory membership
in a bar association based on the Supreme Court's ruling last term in Janus v.
American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, striking down
mandatory union dues for collective bargaining on behalf of government
employees. However, because of the Bar Referendum and the circumscribed
activities for which Bar license fees can be used, the D.C. Bar should be on
solid footing should we face such a challenge.
Who have served as your mentors during your career?
U.S. District Court Judge Harold Greene, for whom I clerked, was my first legal
mentor, followed by Vinnie Cohen, a litigation partner at Hogan & Hartson, who
shepherded me through my first client meetings, depositions, and court arguments. Eldon "Took" Crowell, the name partner of Crowell & Moring, was a cherished friend and mentor who often chided me for being too cautious and
encouraged me to take risks. In fact, I would not be Bar president today if I had
not heeded Took's mantra to take a risk. Other important role models and
mentors include Karen Hastie Williams, George Ruttinger, and Marc Efron. Andy
Marks, who was Bar president when I was on the Bar's Board of Governors, has
been and continues to be a guiding light regarding the president's role. Most
recently, Esther Lim has taken me under her wing to help prepare me for [my
term]. I have been fortunate to learn as I watched her incredible leadership.
What do you do to unwind?
Some sort of physical activity outdoors - jogging, biking, or taking a long walk
with a friend. Sitting down at the piano and cranking out a tune is a welcome
escape for me as well. Baking is another outlet for me. Watch out for my "World
Peace Banana Bread"!
What podcasts are you listening to?
I listen to old broadcasts of "The Moth Radio Hour," "Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me,"
and "This American Life." My 20-something daughter has been trying to get me
interested in "Dirty John," but I am not hooked yet.
Music?
Music is a passion for me. I love classical music (and ballet) and have enjoyed
exploring the many free concerts offered in the D.C. area, such as those at the
Library of Congress and at the National Gallery on Sunday afternoons. My
current pop music go-tos are Meghan Trainor, Ed Sheeran, and Pentatonix.
I am a huge fan of a capella music, so you may see me at a [Yale] Whiffenpoofs
concert when they are in town.
What's something that a lot of people may not know about you?
Even though I don't have a hint of Irish heritage, I host Irish college exchange
students every summer who are part of the Washington Ireland Program for
Service and Leadership. As a result of my 14 years of hosting, I was lucky to be
selected to be a marshal in the 2017 St. Patrick's Day Parade. I enjoy playing the
piano for sing-alongs and host an annual Irish karaoke party each summer and
a Christmas caroling party each December.
What are some of your volunteer activities?
I serve the homeless through various soup kitchens, including So Others Might
Eat, St. Maria's Meals, and Loaves and Fishes. I volunteer with the D.C. Bar Pro
Bono Center's Advice and Referral Clinic and for certain seasonal efforts such as
the "North Pole" gift shop at A Wider Circle and with the Salvation Army Angel
Tree program.
