THE PRO BONO EFFECT

LEE ANN WATSON

Retired; Former Deputy Director for the Division of Investigations,
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
EXPERTISE: Security work, antitrust, complex commercial litigation

JULIE HAMMERMAN

Founding Partner, Thompson Hammerman Davis LLP
EXPERTISE: Insurance law
PRO BONO CENTER EXPERIENCE: 5 years; teaches "Risk Management and
Insurance" seminars for the Nonprofit & Small Business Legal Assistance
Programs

PRO BONO CENTER EXPERIENCE: 1 year, Advocacy & Justice Clinic

(with a focus on social disability cases)

"

I think some people may shy away from [volunteering at the clinic]
because they might never have worked in Social Security, landlord-tenant,
or immigration [law]. But in terms of the material the Pro Bono Center
provides and the way that it is [presented to] you, it's great. I do think retired
attorneys can be better at pro bono volunteering in some instances
because we can prepare detailed affidavits since we have the time.

"

SADINA MONTANI

"

Because I've been doing insurance [law] exclusively throughout my
whole career - which is more than a dozen years now - I realize that I'm
an insurance expert who loves being able to translate that expertise into
the not-for-profit and small business worlds. Some of this is easy advice to
give but hard to come by as far as hiring an attorney to audit your insurance
program. It's just a natural fit and a great opportunity.

"

ADRIENNE E. VAN WINKLE

Shareholder, Vedder Price P.C.

Partner, Williams & Connolly LLP

EXPERTISE: Employment law and litigation

EXPERTISE: Professional liability defense, financial services litigation, copyright, and trade secrets

PRO BONO CENTER EXPERIENCE: Almost 12 years, Nonprofit & Small Business

Legal Assistance Programs

PRO BONO CENTER EXPERIENCE: 9 years, Consumer Law Resource Center

"

My first pro bono experience was representing an individual in a child
custody action. It was not a good fit for me. I'm not a family lawyer nor am I
drawn to becoming one, so the experience was stressful. I realized pretty
early on that the best way for me to give back to the community in the pro
bono world was to do the same type of work as in my day job. I provide
that service to organizations that are providing direct services to the community, [which] may not otherwise be able to afford my services.

"

The work that I do for the Consumer Law Resource Center is a natural
extension of my commercial practice. But those types of disputes range
from debt collection to home-improvement and independent-contractor
disputes to security deposit refunds and small claims cases. Sometimes
folks come in with disputes over used car purchases or repairs. There are
also utility disputes and wage claims. So, there's a broad variety of cases
that we see at the Consumer Law Resource Center.
