AS AVOLUNTEER

C
elebrating its 40th anniversary, the D.C. Bar Pro
Bono Center helped more than 20,000 individuals,
nonprofit organizations, and small businesses in
just the past year. All this would not have been
possible without the help of numerous volunteers
whose legal expertise covers the spectrum of practice
areas. Some attorneys choose the "stay in your lane"
philosophy when it comes to pro bono work, feeling
more comfortable representing clients in matters that
echo what they do on a day-to-day basis. Others,
however, leap at the opportunity to apply their skills
in new areas. Either way, the Center welcomes their
support and provides the training, resources, and
mentorship necessary for them to feel comfortable
and provide competent advice.
These nine volunteers with the D.C. Bar Pro Bono
Center illustrate some of the advantages of
broadening one's horizons as well as the benefits
of applying what you know to better help our
neighbors in need.

Volunteering with the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center helped tremendously
with improving my interview skills because you only have a few minutes
to identify the issues and to bring them forward. I had no idea how difficult
it was to interview people with critical issues in a very short time frame.
The Pro Bono Center has a very good training program. We need a good
understanding of the basics [of landlord-tenant law], and Pro Bono Center
staff help us with the details. This has been a very exciting part of my legal
career.
