HARPER LEE'S
UNFINISHED WORK
Casey Cep's recently published Furious
Hours: Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial
of Harper Lee (Knopf) can be considered
a literary encore following Lee's Go Set
a Watchman and To Kill a Mockingbird
because it incorporates Lee's extensive
research into the mid-1970s crimes committed by Rev. Willie Maxwell, an Alabama
serial killer. Lee intended to use that
research as the basis for a true-crime
novel in the style of Truman Capote's In
Cold Blood, but she never finished it. Cep
threads together Lee's work to recount
the killings and the trial (which Lee attended), as well as to explain Lee's failed
attempt at writing what would have been her third novel.

POLICE TECH: THE GOOD & THE BAD
To address police misconduct, technology companies have rolled out more and
more gadgets that promise to hold law enforcement accountable and make
their jobs easier. In a recent Modern Law Library podcast, "Why Tech Tools Can
Have Promise and Peril for Policing," Jason Tashea interviews Matt Stroud, an
investigative journalist and author of Thin Blue Lie, about the pros and cons and
human rights issues surrounding tasers, body cameras, and facial-recognition
technology.

Cheslie Kryst, this year's Miss USA, disproves the "pageant girl" stereotypes.
The Charlotte, North Carolina-based attorney represents clients in governmentand business-related disputes for Poyner Spruill LLP; she also does pro bono
work for prison inmates. And she's a fashionista who challenges the status quo
of what women lawyers should and shouldn't wear in the professional world.
If you're looking to upgrade your work clothes, check out Kryst's blog, White
Collar Glam, where she offers advice on wardrobe choices that are affordable,
chic, and versatile.

50 YEARS
AFTER STONEWALL

RISING ABOVE FEAR
The legal profession is not for the meek, but many law students and attorneys
struggle with anxiety and fear, which can hinder performance and learning,
according to studies. In her new book Untangling Fear in Lawyering: A Four-Step
Journey Toward Powerful Advocacy (American Bar Association), Heidi K. Brown
explores many of the anxieties that people in the legal field face. More importantly, she offers a simplified process to break free from those chains that hold
lawyers back.

The United States has made great strides
toward protecting the lives of people
within the LGBTQ community, from
decriminalizing homosexuality and
squashing housing and employment
discrimination to legalizing same-sex
marriage. While the fight for equal justice
and equality is far from over, Marc Stein's
recently published Stonewall Riots: A
Documentary History (NYU Press) shows
just how far the country has come. Stein
lays out the cultural and political landscape before, during, and after those June 1969 riots in New York City's
Greenwich Village, which catalyzed the modern gay rights movement.
