1972
D.C. Court of Appeals creates the D.C. Bar, vesting it authority
to regulate all attorney practice under a single disciplinary
code. Prominent Washington, D.C., attorney E. Barrett
Prettyman Jr. becomes its first president.
Clients' Security Trust Fund is established as a mechanism to
reimburse clients for losses caused by dishonest conduct of
Bar members.
1973
Civil rights attorney Charles T.
Duncan is elected as the first
African American president of
the D.C. Bar.
D.C. Bar forms 16 " divisions "
ranging from Administrative Law
and Agency Practice to Taxation,
the precursor of the current D.C.
Bar Communities.
1975
D.C. Bar creates a continuing legal education program on a
self-supporting basis.
1976
District Lawyer, the D.C. Bar's flagship publication, goes to
print. It is renamed Washington Lawyer in 1986.
1977
D.C. Bar's Board of Governors is expanded to include
nonlawyers as nonvoting members.
The D.C. Bar Foundation is established as a vehicle for
lawyers and law firms to contribute to legal services
organizations in the District of Columbia.
1978
The D.C. Bar Lawyer
Referral and Information
Service, forerunner of
the D.C. Bar Pro Bono
Center, is established.
Today the Pro Bono
Center is the largest
provider of pro bono
legal help in the District.
1991
The District of Columbia Rules of Professional Conduct go
into effect.
1993
D.C. Bar establishes the William J. Brennan Jr. Award and
the Thurgood Marshall Award for exceptional achievement
in the pursuit of equal justice and opportunity.
1984
Marna S. Tucker becomes the
first woman president of the D.C.
Bar. In the succeeding years, 12
more women are elected to the
Bar's highest office.
1985
D.C. Court of Appeals authorizes the establishment of the
Interest on Lawyers Trust Account (IOLTA) Program.
D.C. Bar creates the Lawyer Counseling Program, precursor
of the Lawyer Assistance Program.
1989
D.C. Bar establishes the Beatrice Rosenberg Award for
Excellence in Government Service.
1990
D.C. Bar leadership elects to bring the Bar's Continuing
Legal Education Program in-house, securing MCLE
accreditation the same year. Today the award-winning
program presents more than 130 classes a year to at least
7,000 attorneys.
