NOTHING TO FEAR FROM AI
I read with interest Sarah Kellogg's November 2018 article "I, Lawyer?
Artificial Intelligence & Law." I couldn't help but wonder, here we go again
- another "scary" article about computers and robots replacing human
beings. We have been hearing about artificial intelligence putting lawyers
out of work about as long as we have been reading that printed books will
be replaced by digital devices. Sure, there have been some changes in both
areas, but both lawyers and books still exist.
What I think will happen is that artificial intelligence will elevate lawyers,
making us more efficient, increasing our productivity, and simplifying
routine tasks so that our time can be freed up to better handle complex
cases and provide top-notch service to our clients. What's best for the legal
industry and our clients in the long run is for technology and humans to
coexist.

AFTER CARPENTER, MIXED MESSAGES
Anna Stolley Persky's article "After Carpenter: Privacy Concerns in the
Digital Age" (November 2018) sheds a light on the U.S. Supreme Court's
efforts to keep up with laws pertaining to digital privacy. In Carpenter,
the key issue is how much privacy do we have on our cell phones.
While the Supreme Court ruled that individuals have an expectation of
privacy regarding information about the location of their cell phone,
confusion remains about records held by a third party. The third-party
component will have tech companies rethinking how they collect and
oversee data and tie up courtrooms for years to come.
