I n 2001 Monique Fortenberry's friend committed suicide. Like Fortenberry, her friend was a lawyer. Fortenberry found herself grieving so much that she sought counseling from the D.C. Bar Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP), a free and confidential service for members of the Bar, judges, and law students struggling with substance use or mental health disorders. "Work itself was already stressful. After my dear friend took her life, I was struggling," Fortenberry recalls. D.C.
