NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS TIPS
By John Murph

H

aving New Year's resolutions can exhilarate because it gives you goals
to strive toward. They can also stress you out, especially if you're a
perfectionist who beats yourself up after a slip-up, or a super-ambitious
person who hopes to conquer a herculean goal. Take these five tips to help
lessen the stress and better enjoy your New Year's resolution journey.
Dig deep inside to articulate the intentions of your resolution. It'll help
you stay on point during lapsing moments. Before you dedicate passion and
possibly enormous time and money into a seemingly worthwhile New Year's resolution, make sure that it's something you want and not something that was projected
onto you, or something that you just envy about someone else.

Focus on the journey rather than the endgame. When we dream big, sometimes we can get paralyzed by the enormity of it. Instead of zeroing in on the larger
goal, focus on the smaller, manageable steps toward making that big New Year's
resolution attainable. It will allow for more enjoyment and help prevent burnout.

Pinpoint the habits that possibly prevent you from accomplishing the
resolution. Just as easy as it is to get paralyzed by the largeness of some New
Year's resolutions, sometimes we allow smaller habits to nip our progress. In the spirit
of mindfulness, pay attention to some of those little habits (my two biggest are
procrastination and perfectionism) that hold you back.

Show compassion to yourself when you fall off course, or when
the journey becomes longer and more challenging than you
expected. Keeping our eyes on the prize is easier said than done. We all
fall off the wagon or get distracted at some point in the journey. Don't
let those moments get the best of you by dedicating more energy punishing
yourself for some missteps than picking yourself back up.

Treat yourself when you reach
certain benchmarks. Mark those
milestones by treating yourself as you
finish smaller accomplishments toward
that larger New Year's resolution. Just
make sure those treats don't derail your
long-term goal.
