SOTOMAYOR ADDRESSES
NAWJ EVENT HONORING
JUDGE BLACKBURNE-RIGSBY
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor addressed the National
Association of Women Judges, District Four, at its November 2 reception
honoring D.C. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby as
recipient of the chapter's bi-annual Edna G. Parker Award. Sotomayor and
Blackburne-Rigsby (holding plaque) are joined by Judge Julie E. Frantz of
the Multnomah County Circuit Court in Oregon; Chief Judge Beryl A. Howell
of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia; New York State Supreme
Court Justice Tanya Kennedy, who serves as NAWJ president; and D.C. Superior
Court Associate Judge Heidi M. Pasichow.

LSIC'S EXPUNGEMENT DAY
SERVES OVER 300 D.C. RESIDENTS
The D.C. Law Students in Court hosted its first Expungement Day on October
23, drawing over 30 local attorneys and law students and serving more than 300
District residents seeking expungement of criminal records. The event, held at
the Department of Employment Services in Northeast D.C. during National Pro
Bono Week, was hosted in collaboration with the Mayor's Office on Returning
Citizen Affairs.
DEPUTY AG ROSENSTEIN
DELIVERS FLANNERY LECTURE
Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein delivered the Ninth Annual
Judge Thomas A. Flannery Lecture at the E. Barrett Prettyman United States
Courthouse on November 1 speaking about the challenges of being a federal
prosecutor and the need for dedicated prosecutors in public service.

LABOR DEPARTMENT HONORED
FOR PRO BONO COMMITMENT
U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Chief Judge Beryl A. Howell (right)
presented the John C. Cruden Federal Agency Pro Bono Leadership Award to
the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of the Solicitor for its pro bono efforts
across the country. Receiving the award on behalf of the Solicitor's Office were
(from left) Deborah Birnbaum, pro bono program coordinator; Kathy Bissell,
deputy solicitor for regional enforcement; and Claire Rodriguez, pro bono
program coordinator. The October 24 Federal Government Attorney Pro Bono
Recognition Reception was hosted by the D.C. Circuit Judicial Conference.
