GLOBAL & DOMESTIC OUTLOOK

INNOVATIVE
Mental Health Programs

By Tracy Schorn

T

he World Health Organization defines mental health as "a state of
well-being in which an individual can realize his or her own potential,
cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and make
a contribution to the community." Here's a look at different approaches
to emotional well-being and policymaking around the globe.

ARGENTINA When it comes to therapy,
Argentinians win for the most shrinks per capita
- approximately 198 psychologists per 100,000
residents. Argentinians don't suffer the same
stigma for treating depression or other psychiatric problems because mental health is
considered part of overall good health.

AUSTRALIA In Oz, an ounce of prevention is
worth a ton of cure. That's why the Australian
government's National Youth Mental Health
Foundation created Headspace, an intervention
program for youth focused on prevention and
early intervention of mental health and addiction
issues. According to its website, "Research shows
that 75 percent of mental health issues emerge
before the age of 25. By treating these issues
early and providing a holistic model of support,
the risk of them developing into more serious
problems is greatly decreased." In such a large
country, access to services is challenging, but
Headspace is both an online resource as well
as a physical one, with locations around the
country - especially in rural areas. Services are
free or low cost, and there's even an online counseling service, eHeadspace, where kids can talk
confidentially to someone seven days a week.

Invested over
$39 million
to develop the
Mental Health
Innovation
Network
CANADA Canadians are famously nice. So nice,
in fact, that Canada doesn't just promote mental
health in its own country, it's also a big booster
of global mental health. Canada has invested
more than $39 million to develop the Mental
Health Innovation Network, which has funded
70 projects in 26 countries. According to Dr.
Shekhar Saxena, the World Health Organization's
director of mental health and substance abuse,
"[Canada's] leadership is helping to turn the
tide in the global mental health challenge, with
substantial impact in low- and middle-income
countries."
Meanwhile, Canada fights stigma against mental
illness at home with Let's Talk Day. This event
encourages citizens to speak freely about their
mental health struggles and raises money,
awareness, and compassion for mental health
across the country.
