Georgetown University Law Center professor Tanina Rostain teaches the course "Technology,
Innovation and Law Practice," which culminates in the Iron Tech competition each spring.
violence. The Excellence in Design award went
to the app STAN: The SNAP and TANF Assistant of
New Mexico, which helps families determine their
eligibility for public benefits and fill out the necessary forms. It was developed in partnership with
Law Access New Mexico.
The Social Media Award went to the Florida
Interpersonal Help App, developed for Florida's
Office of the State Courts Administrator. The app
determines what type of relief users can seek for
domestic violence or sexual abuse, and helps
users safely fill out forms to file in court.
"Technology offers a lot of solutions to the
problem of access to justice. It's critical to train
lawyers to be nimble in the area of technology
and law," says Iron Tech organizer and Georgetown
Law professor Tanina Rostain.
You don't have to be a coder to tackle access
to justice issues, says Rostain, although some
students do come with that skillset - you just
have to be a creative problem solver. On the IT
side, Rostain partners with Kevin Mulcahy, education director at Neota Logic, Inc., to help the teams
build the interfaces they imagine.

The resulting apps come with handy features
familiar to most users - expense tracking, an
option to take pictures of and upload receipts,
and alerts, among others - but also include
features particular to the needs of the unrepresented, such as compendiums of pro bono
services and other resources.
Navigating the justice system is hard, but
now thanks to a generation of innovation at
Georgetown Law, it's a bit easier. Rostain says
she enjoys knowing that the apps the students
create go on to help organizations serve their
clients, and help clients find resources.

For providing exceptional
interest rates on IOLTA
accounts, resulting in their
designation as IOLTA Prime
Partners, ensuring deposits earn
more for legal services for those
in need.
We encourage you to look to
these banks for your IOLTA and
other banking needs, or talk to
your bank about becoming an
IOLTA Prime Partner.
Other banks authorized to hold
DC IOLTA accounts are listed
on the DC Bar Foundation
website.

"I feel really, really fortunate to be at Georgetown
because of its commitment to access to justice
and its commitment to thinking about technologies in the legal space," Rostain says.
