FASHION & RETAIL
For some lawyers, fashion isn't just about what to wear to court
- it's the heart and soul of their practice. According to management consulting company McKinsey & Company, the global
fashion industry is worth more than $2.4 trillion and only continues to grow as markets expand in Africa and Asia. The globalization of fashion presents companies with myriad legal
challenges in the form of intellectual property, labor, and trade
issues. In response, a number of firms have developed practices
dedicated to serving clients in the fashion and retail industry.
Arent Fox LLP, Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP, and Fox Rothschild
LLP are among those firms dedicated to keeping up with the
latest (legal) trends.
VIDEO GAMES
Video games have come a long way since the days of Pac-Man and Super
Mario Bros. They are now a multibillion-dollar industry spanning every
platform, from traditional consoles to smartphones and tablets. Given the
industry's size and developments such as professional gaming sponsorships
and the ability to exchange in-game currency for real-world dollars, an environment ripe for legal and regulatory challenges has emerged. At the ready
are specialized practices at larger firms like DLA Piper as well as niche firms
like the McArthur Law Firm in Los Angeles, which is dedicated to addressing
legal matters in the video game industry.
RACE HORSES
In the age of self-driving cars, the fact that there
are lawyers focused on horses may come as a
surprise. But in Kentucky, horses are big business,
thanks to huge prize pots and six-figure breeding
fees for top stallions. To help owners and breeders
navigate the complexities of high-dollar horses,
Lexington-based firm Miller, Griffin & Marks, PSC
has an active equine law practice. Much of its
work is centered around the thoroughbred horse
breeding and racing for which the Bluegrass State
is famous.
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES
The past decade has seen an explosion in the craft beer and spirits
industry, with microbreweries and small-batch distilleries popping up
all over the United States. Even as beer sales experience a slight overall
slowdown, craft beer sales are on the rise, according to the Brewers
Association, which represents small and independent brewers. But
marketing a craft beer or whiskey can be challenging thanks to the
patchwork of state and federal liquor laws, some dating to Prohibition.
That's where firms like Lehrman Beverage Law, PLLC in Virginia and
the Law Office of Brian F. Simas in California come in, helping brewers
and distillers with everything from labeling to distribution.
