Improving lives
through pro bono
service
In 2018, the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center
marked the 40th anniversary of its
founding by the D.C. Bar.

W

e began as lawyers and advocates determined to
serve our District neighbors who could not afford
a lawyer. Over more than four decades, our dedicated
volunteers, loyal law firm and federal government
agency partners, and generous donors have made it
possible for the Pro Bono Center to serve more than
half a million D.C. residents.
In 2018, the Pro Bono Center continued to leverage
a small, dedicated staff to recruit, train, and support
more than 1,500 volunteers to provide legal counsel,
brief advice, and information to more than 20,000 of
our most vulnerable neighbors-people like Rodney
Miles (pictured above), whose pro bono lawyers
helped stop his family's unfair eviction from their
home. We also served more than 2,500 community
nonprofits and small businesses on which low-income
D.C. residents rely every day for critical services and
employment. We matched 72 nonprofit organizations
with pro bono counsel-the highest number in
our history. Pro bono service makes it possible for
nonprofits like Art Enables, which helps people
with disabilities become working artists, and small
businesses like Wanda's on 7th, a hair salon in Shaw,

Advocacy & Justice Clinic volunteers Bernie
Archbold, Serge Agbre, and Nina Armah from

not only to operate responsibly but to thrive as they
contribute to our shared community.
This life-changing work wouldn't be possible without
the support of D.C. Bar members. Together, we ensure
that access to justice is a reality for our neighbors in
need-for the families facing eviction, individuals with
disabilities unable to work, parents seeking to preserve
their families, immigrants at risk of deportation, and
others whose legal rights would have gone unprotected
without a lawyer standing up for them. With gratitude
to our loyal donors and dedicated volunteers, the
Pro Bono Center is proud to highlight our recent
accomplishments and recognize our most generous
contributors in the following pages. Thank you for
helping us transform lives in our community.

The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center is supported
entirely by voluntary contributions, not
D.C. Bar membership dues.
