MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
She has celebrated budget wins that have
increased and improved services as well as
expanded housing and employment oppor-
tunities due to her criminal records discrimination work.
Harding recognizes those whose support has
helped her and others continue their advocacy.
"I'm always so grateful for the full support
of our board," she says. "They back us up even
when we make powerful people really angry."
Harding says the legal services community in
the District is great at supporting the work and
advocacy of others. Even D.C. residents who
have no professional connection to the issues
have surprised her with their help.
"When some people in my neighborhood were
protesting against the siting of the new family
shelter nearby, we had an amazing group of
neighbors that came together to show support
for the families and, to this day, are still supporting in meaningful ways the families who
live in that shelter. A lot of those neighbors are
the first ones to sign our petitions or send an
email to an elected official, and some take
every opportunity to ask their elected leaders
what they are doing about homelessness and
affordable housing."
Those interested in helping to address the
needs of the District's homeless have many
opportunities to contribute, Harding says.
"Everyone plays a part. We need volunteers to
staff our legal intake and take on impact litigation. We need donations to keep doing this
work because we don't take government
money. We need legal services attorneys to
keep doing their work and continue being such
great allies. We need people within local government agencies to do their best to ensure
compliance with the law and to push their
clients to recognize where biases get in the
way of providing good, fair government
services. We need everyone to amplify our
work ... and get engaged in local politics
and advocacy."
