Legal Aid Society of D.C.

When the court starts scheduling
in-person hearings again, this huge
backlog in child custody, divorce, and
child support cases will start moving
through the system really quickly.
JULIA EVE PRESTON
Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia

Fortunately for FLAN's clients, the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center has an in-house
Advocacy & Justice Clinic that provides full representation in housing,
family law, public benefits, personal injury defense, and consumer law
matters. "So, often we are able to make a direct referral to that clinic, and
clients can get connected to full representation that way," Nanini says.
As the pandemic continues, legal experts are anticipating a surge in
family law cases, with disputes exacerbated by job loss, financial uncertainty, loss of housing, and prolonged emotional and mental stress.

Preston predicts a huge backlog in family law cases once the courts
begin reopening for in-person hearings. "We are expecting an uptick in
the future that will span all areas of family law," she says. "Right now, we
are seeing a holding pattern for all of the family law cases. Everything is
moving at a slow pace because of COVID-19. Ultimately, when the court
starts scheduling in-person hearings again, this huge backlog in child
custody, divorce, and child support cases will start moving through the
system really quickly."
FLAN, which has already proved its mettle in responding effectively
and efficiently to the rising need for legal services during the COVID-19
crisis, is bracing for that next wave of cases post-pandemic. "FLAN will
be onsite or remote - either way we will be ready to serve clients,"
says Nanini.
