Law Practice & Pro Bono
Interview by Angela Boone

I

f you were to ask Kamal Al-Salihi, an associate at
Jones Day, what experience has had the greatest

impact on his life, you might find his response
somewhat unexpected - soccer. Al-Salihi was
born and raised in a village in The Gambia, where
his parents were religious missionaries, emigrating
to the United States in 2004.
"One of my earliest memories is working on my dad's cashew farm. The
place I grew up in The Gambia was divided very much block by block,
so everybody on your block was your people. All the kids on mine were
my age, between five and eight. It was after the rainy season, so these
10 or 15 guys and I had to clear the grass that grows after the rains,"
Al-Salihi recalls.
They didn't speak the same language, Al-Salihi says, but they ended up
forging lifelong friendships. "They became my soccer team until I left to
come to the United States. We were extremely competitive, and they're
still some of my best friends. Everybody is in different parts of the world
now, but we keep up on WhatsApp."
Playing soccer not only was an indelible part of Al-Salihi's childhood
in The Gambia, but it also continues to influence him in his legal career.
"Soccer is very competitive, so it lends itself to being a lawyer," Al-Salihi
says.

"Professionally, every experience where I am 100 percent immersed
in an activity, in pursuit of a particular outcome, leaves me feeling very
accomplished and wanting more. As a lawyer, I've felt this at trials and
during arbitration hearings. They are all-consuming, but they feel like
a soccer game in a way - you're doing everything you can to best the
other side while following the rules."
At Jones Day, Al-Salihi represents individuals and commercial clients in
complex civil litigation, including multidistrict proceedings. He is also
a dedicated attorney volunteer, serving low-income clients through
the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center's Landlord Tenant Resource Center at D.C.
Superior Court and the center's Advice & Referral Clinic. Al-Salihi also has
worked extensively with the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless
and the Children's Law Center on pro bono matters.
