"I coach girls baseball in D.C. It's a community
activity that revitalizes and rejuvenates me. I feel like
coaching baseball defines me as much as anything
else I do. When we assemble for baseball games, it
feels like we're together, a real team. It is a lot of fun
for the girls who show up on Sundays to practice
and throw the baseball around. Then the team
goes out and plays in tournaments. We are usually
the only girls in the tournament, and that inspires
me. I love coaching and being around kids playing
baseball. It can sometimes be exhausting, but a
good kind of exhausting."

"I set aside time to spend with my wife and kids.
It's a great break when I'm with my family and
with friends. I don't constantly think about work
when I'm with them. I can relax. It's a lot easier to
compartmentalize things if I'm listening to my
daughter sing songs from Disney movies. She has
a nice voice and is in musical theater. It's a different
kind of thinking and being from my work as a
lawyer. At the same time, bonding with my children
brings great satisfaction. There are times when it
would be nice to be at some of their events, but it's
not possible because I've got to be in court. But
when I'm there with them, it is where I want to be."

"I practice meditation. I don't think of meditation as
primarily a stress-release activity. What's important
to me about meditation is that the fundamental
goal is mindfulness, to be more present in my life.
It helps me be less reactive. If you are present, not
just externally but internally, you have a better
chance of being balanced. I'm not Buddha. I'm still
a typical New Yorker, born and bred. I try to sit in the
morning to set the frame for the day. It won't make
for a perfect day. Sometimes, you have to accept
that cases are messy. Accepting the world
as it is and accepting myself as I am is more possible
with meditation."
