We encourage students to continue doing what
served them well prior to law school: that they
should not let law school be all consuming. Regular
exercise, meditation, writing, cooking - any
outlet that takes the mind off the rigors of law
school, when performed regularly, will allow a
student to relax.
I say to my students on the first day of class that
I know they are experiencing stress and that it is
important to be working on their skills in coping
with stress, along with all the other important skills
they are learning in law school. I ask them to reflect
on the methods they have used to alleviate stress
in the past, such as exercise, music, being with
friends who don't trigger stress, cooking, meditating, or whatever, and to be sure they are building
in time for these activities as equally important to
striving to do well in law school. Then I try to touch
base with students over the course of the semester
on these topics, and I show that I care about them
as human beings.
We try to assist students by offering outlets: weekly
mindfulness and yoga classes, recreational equipment available for checkout, wellness weeks, and
movie nights. We also offer onsite professional
counseling. We remind our students that they need
not be alone in confronting difficult challenges, and
that they can come to us for confidential support at
any time.

I tell students to stay in the moment as best [as they] can. A great
deal of stress originates in worry over things we cannot control, like
imagined disasters. Our minds conjure scenarios, the vast majority
of which never happen. We also generate angst by regretting things
that have already happened, without a chance of changing the
outcome. We have all dealt with a number of challenges as they arise,
we have survived in the past, and, in many instances, prevailed. This
is not to say you cannot plan for the future, but when doing so,
you are engaging it in the present. There is no need to stress when
confronting challenges in the moment.
