MAY SUBSTANTIVE READS

For what it's worth, I'm not sure if anything
changed, but I found the May 2020 issue of
Washington Lawyer to be one of the best in quite
a while. The articles seemed more relevant,
topical, and engaging than previous issues.

ON UNSUCCESSFUL NOMINATIONS

As always, I enjoy receiving Washington Lawyer
magazine, and I thought Ronald Goldfarb's
article on Brett Kavanaugh (May 2020 issue) was
well written. I particularly agree with him that
Ruth Marcus' book is the best one to date on
the subject.
"We try to eat lunch and dinner together. Sometimes I feel like I'm running a diner at lunchtime.
Some of my friends pack their kids lunch like at school."
Michael Weitzner (above, with children Nate, Emma, and Matthew)
Cooper & Kirk
"The thing that was a hard transition at first, but
in hindsight seems obvious, was to embrace
the fact that the curtain has fallen between
your home and personal life and work life, and
to be honest about that. In some cases, it's
brought me closer to colleagues."
Carrie Garber Siegrist (left, with children
Eleanor and Thomas)
Faegre Drinker

There is one small error in the piece. Mr.
Goldfarb writes, "One prior Court nominee was
disqualified for smoking a joint in college." This
isn't, however, the whole story. As the Wikipedia
entry on Judge Douglas Ginsburg states:
Ginsburg's nomination collapsed for entirely
different reasons from Bork's rejection, as he
almost immediately came under some fire
when NPR's Nina Totenberg revealed that
Ginsburg had used marijuana "on a few
occasions" during his student days in the
1960s and while an assistant professor at
Harvard in the 1970s. It was Ginsburg's continued use of marijuana after graduation
and as a professor that made his actions
more serious in the minds of many senators
and members of the public.

"I'm not saying we don't have our moments. But
they are very respectful of the fact that this is
not normal - and it's not normal for mom and
dad either."

Mr. Goldfarb's greater point remains apposite,
that what Judge Ginsburg was criticized for
pales in comparison to the allegations (true or
not) against then-Judge Kavanaugh to any fairminded person.
