Roz Overstreet-Gonzalez
Stands Up for the Vulnerable

R

osalyn "Roz" OverstreetGonzalez has been a staff
attorney at the Public
Defender Service for the District
of Columbia (PDS) for the past 25
years, but one might think she just
started, given the cheery way she
recounts the ups and downs of her
professional life. She speaks quickly,
eager to discuss the challenges her
clients face, the value of supportive
colleagues, and the experiences
that set her on her path.
Overstreet-Gonzalez was the only black female
in her class at a private religious school in
Highland, California. One afternoon during
recess when she was in the sixth grade, some
students were throwing rocks, one of which hit
a teacher. Overstreet-Gonzalez had been
playing on the other side of the playground,
but that didn't stop one of the students from
pointing the finger at her.
Punishment was swift with no due process.
The teacher brought over a trash can and,
without asking any questions, told OverstreetGonzalez to fill it with rocks and gravel from
the playground. Although she was only 11 at
the time, Overstreet-Gonzalez remembers the
injustice she felt - the anger, humiliation, and
sadness of having to face an unfair accusation
alone. At that moment she knew she wanted
to become a lawyer so she could stand alongside the wrongly accused.

Overstreet-Gonzalez went on to study Spanish
linguistics at Howard University. After graduation she worked as a bilingual advocate for a
growing community of Salvadoran immigrants
seeking refuge from the country's civil war. The
experience serving indigent persons helped
propel her toward public defense. After
