LOVE
for the Lost Art of Handwriting
(Editors' Note: Several members have written to D.C. Bar President
Susan M. Hoffman to express their thoughts on her September 2019
column "The Handwritten Note: Making It Personal.")

I think your column is great and reminds me of the people whose
personal notes I've treasured over the years. I am, of course, acutely aware
of the irony about emailing you this reaction, but I just couldn't wait to tell
you how much I enjoyed your column.

OK, you win! After having read Jon Meacham's George H.W. Bush biography Destiny and Power, I promised myself to write a note of congratulations to you some months ago. Your column on the handwritten note in
Washington Lawyer was, I believe, directly aimed at me for failing to follow
the Bush model.
I was so proud that you had thrown your hat in the ring to run for the
D.C. Bar presidency, and even more excited to learn that you had won.
Actually, given the things you have represented over many years, the legal
profession won with your election.

Just a quick note to tell you how much I enjoyed your column about
handwritten notes. I circulated it to all the attorneys in my office!

.

Jeffrey M. Schwaber
Rockville, Maryland

As soon as I saw your president's column this month, I knew what I had
to do. I totally agree with you, and I really love the way you expressed this
thought in your article. Judge [Gerhard] Gesell taught me that when I was
still an Army lawyer arguing cases here, before I even became an AUSA,
and I still have his note. I don't want to admit how long ago that was.

I just read your excellent piece on the virtues of handwritten letters.
I agree with you completely, and I'm glad you shared your thoughts on
this with our many colleagues. I have written many such notes to new
colleagues over the years, just as [Crowell & Moring cofounder Took
Crowell] did when you joined [the firm]. My inspiration was a colleague
who wrote a condolence note to me in 1983 when I lost my dad. I will
never forget that gesture, and hopefully I have inspired others to follow
this tradition.

.
