Anne Dailey, a partner at Troutman Sanders LLP, with her husband, Joe Dailey,
at the 2016 Lawyers Have Heart race.
AHA now manages the race, and Frank and Raul have
stepped into consulting roles. Today, the executive
leadership team behind Lawyers Have Heart consists
of 25 legal leaders in D.C. who are working to engage
attorneys from all corners of the region's legal
community, including in-house counsel (13 members
of the leadership team are in-house lawyers). The
leadership team represents an array of organizations,
corporations, tech companies, and law firms.
"In 2017 we expect 6,000 lawyers, their friends, and
colleagues, making it one of the largest 10Ks on the
East Coast," says Eric Reicin, vice president, general
counsel, and corporate secretary for MorganFranklin
Consulting, LLC and current chair of the Lawyers Have
Heart executive leadership team. "We also expect at
least 250 organizations to sponsor in some regard,
which includes law firms, corporations, and legal
services providers."
Aiming to make Lawyers Have Heart an event open to
all, Reicin and others in the leadership team are
looking into creating a high school division of the
race, continuing to extend sponsorships to
organizations outside the legal realm, and potentially
expanding Lawyers Have Heart nationally.
"When Lawyers Have Heart was founded 26 years
ago, its focus was the law firms, but the focus now is
in-house and outside counsel that are working
together to make the premiere athletic, philanthropic
event specifically led by lawyers in the Washington
metropolitan area," Reicin says.
Reicin also believes heart health is a cause everyone
can rally behind. "It's an opportunity to raise money

for [AHA] and assist in its research, advocacy, and
education. It's a cause that is non-controversial and
contributes to the community, and that's why there's
been a great increase in participation for the event
over the past few years."

FOR WELLNESS AND A CAUSE
Anne Dailey, a partner at Troutman Sanders LLP,
knows the positives of Lawyers Have Heart first hand.
Dailey has been an off-and-on runner for years and
ran in the Lawyers Have Heart 10K several times. Then,
she suffered a stroke in early 2014.
"When I had my stroke, my entire left side was
paralyzed - I couldn't move my arm or my leg,"
Dailey recalls. "I was in the office on a Sunday and
called 911 myself. I was taken to the hospital and was
treated quickly, within about an hour of my
symptoms starting."
Fortunately, Dailey's recovery was speedy, and within
a few days she was able to move again and begin
rehabilitation. But one thing on her mind was getting
back to running. "I told my physical therapist that
getting back the strength to run was a big goal of
mine. I wanted to be able to complete a 5K by my
40th birthday that July," she says.
After a few days of rehab she was discharged, walking
out of the hospital on her own two feet. Dailey slowly
got back into running, and completed a St. Patrick's
Day 8K race well before her July birthday deadline.
That year she and her team also raised over $5,000 for
AHA and the American Stroke Association in a 5K run.
In 2015 Dailey took on a role in the executive

leadership team of Lawyers Have Heart, continuing to
do her part to combat heart disease and stroke.
"When I go out there and talk to people about it, I can
say, look, the money that was raised here directly
helps me, and there are many more people out there
like me who need help," Dailey says. "We haven't
eradicated heart disease yet, and there's still people
out there having heart attacks and strokes, and until
the need is gone, there will still be a need for the
American Heart Association, the American Stroke
Association, and events like Lawyers Have Heart."
Jeremy Marwell, an appellate litigator at Vinson &
Elkins LLP, says Lawyers Have Heart is a great way to
bring together members of his firm for a good cause
and for wellness. In 2016 Vinson assembled a team of
over 20 people, including attorneys, staff, and
summer associates, and prepared them for the race
by hosting training runs, wellness programs, and
much more.
"One of the best things about the race [is] that people
from all experience levels can participate," Marwell
says. "We have everyone, from very experienced
triathletes to folks out there doing their first run and a
bunch of folks doing it at a walking pace. That's one of
the things we like about the event - it's inclusive and
anyone who wants to get out and do something
healthy can do it."
The race also is great for team building and improving
relationships, Marwell adds. "We see Lawyers Have
Heart as an opportunity for our attorneys and staff to
strengthen those personal relationships outside the
office. Everyone is in a great, celebratory mood during
