I love IFTTT (If This Then That), a platform that
makes it really easy to develop and use little
"applets" to trigger conditional events across
devices or apps that a person uses. For example,
if you wish that email attachments you get in your
inbox would always be uploaded to Dropbox or
Google Drive, there's an applet for that! There are
also applets to sync your profile photo across social
media accounts, to track your work hours in Google
Calendar, to receive summaries of your Fitbit activity
in weekly emails, to log your completed Uber trips
in a spreadsheet, and to get notifications when
people post an item you're looking for on Craigslist.
In addition to being useful, I especially love the fact
that IFTTT encourages users to tinker with how
their services work and are connected, and to
explore ways in which services could be improved.
I recently purchased an Ecovacs Deebot robot
vacuum and have been raving about it around the
office. I have a cat and keeping up with vacuuming
was an unavoidable and frustrating chore. Now,
I just press a button on a remote control and this
little machine does all the work for me while I watch
the news or catch up on email. It's adorable to
watch it putter around my small apartment. The
cat, however, does not share my affection with
the newest member of our household.
I'm biased but my favorite technology is an iOS app
I developed with my husband - called AliRecap
- available on the Apple App Store. Developing
an app was always on his bucket list, and we really
liked working together on it. It's designed for family
law attorneys to calculate and avoid potential
alimony penalties by the IRS. Otherwise, my most
necessary piece of technology is my breast pump.
We have a love-hate relationship. It allows me to
work and still provide for my baby, so I experience
a little less "mom guilt" at the office.
