apps that help users navigate the
justice system, find legal resources,
and apply for legal aid.
The practicum culminates with the Iron Tech
Lawyer Competition, now coming up on its 10th
year. In a sort of a legal techie Thunderdome,
students compete in front of a panel of judges to
win Excellence in Design, Social Media Award, and
- for the all-around best app - Iron Tech Lawyer.
Coimbra Jackson, J.D. candidate 2018, along with
team members Summer Danzeisen, Luc Nguyen,
and Rob Van Someren Greve, won this year's Iron
Tech Lawyer prize for their app, the New Orleans
Release Date Calculator. Developed for the New
Orleans Public Defender's Office, the app helps
attorneys and family members calculate when
clients and relatives will be eligible for release, as
well as to keep track of prisoners who have been
detained past their release date.
"My group was paired with the New Orleans Public
Defender's Office," Jackson says. "Our task was to
create a release date calculator that would take in
personal information and determine possible
release dates based on good time releases, parole,
or maximum sentencing.

and relatives will be eligible for release.
"One of our biggest issues was determining who
our target audience would be. We could make it
just for public defenders, hoping to better advise
their clients on plea deals, or we could expand it to
family members," which the group decided to do,
Jackson says.

resources. However, this was difficult because
reentry resources are somewhat hard to find in
New Orleans. After diligent research and patience,
we found some resources," Jackson adds.
