Where the law intersects with culture & lifestyle

HISTORY BEYOND
THE HALLS

POLITICAL TALK
- WITH MANNERS
Reasoned debate without partisan caterwauling?
That's the concept behind this weekly half-hour
public radio podcast. Left, Right, & Center provides
a "civilized yet provocative antidote to the
screaming talking heads that dominate political
debate." The show features news analysts Josh
Barro of Business Insider as (center) moderator;
Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation (for
the left); and political commentator Rich Lowry
(for the right) discussing a current event of the
week with wit and good manners.

Anglophiles and history buffs, park yourself right
here. If you've ever wanted to wander around
a Gothic English graveyard, a stately manor home,
or an abandoned romantic ruin, now you can do
so virtually with historian Caroline as your guide.
The blog Flickering Lamps provides meticulously
researched histories of "how buildings, monuments and spaces reflect the attitudes, values
and stories from the time they were created, and
how their uses and meanings have changed over
time." Explorations include "West Norwood's
Magnificent Greek Necropolis," "Taking a Look
Inside the Mausoleum of an Eccentric Earl and
His Tragic Mistress," or "Vindolanda: Uncovering
the Secrets of a Roman Fort." The blog name
comes from a Winston Churchill quote: "History
with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail
of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to
revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams
the passion of former days."
