The Value of International Law Experience

s the legal profession becomes increasingly global, attorneys should
consider building their experience abroad and growing their international contacts. Kristen M. Young, a partner at White & Case LLP who
specializes in international commercial and investment treaty arbitration, and
who has worked with clients around the world - particularly in Eastern Europe
and Central Asia, shares how working abroad has advanced her career and
provides tips for attorneys interested in going global.

EXPLORE DIFFERENT LEGAL
SYSTEMS, CULTURES
As a junior associate at White & Case, I had the good fortune of spending almost
two years in the firm's Paris office. My experience living and working abroad
gave me exposure to different legal systems and cultures, which expanded my
perspective and enhanced my ability to understand and relate to clients
abroad. In international arbitration, we often look to comparative law, so having
familiarity with both common law and civil law concepts also has assisted me
in thinking creatively about our cases and how best to serve our clients.

In addition, my experience in Paris gave me the opportunity to develop a
diverse network of contacts outside of the United States, which I have been
able to use over the course of my career.

BEFORE YOU GO

* Learn a foreign language. Speaking one or more foreign languages is
a great asset.
